Private Brentford Courtyard
This very small garden in a quiet residential street in Brentford was overlooked from all sides and created a design challenge, which we were more than happy to rise to. The owners were hoping to create a space that they could use in the summer months and felt calming and most importantly, private.
After exploring different possible layouts to address the privacy issues, we settled on a layout that nestled a seating space in the south corner of the garden. This spot receives the most sunlight but also hides the family from views from neighbouring windows.
The new pergola provides shade and privacy in the hotter summer days and, alongside the new multi-stemmed tree and shrubs, adds architectural interest in the winter months. The square shape of the garden is mirrored in the layout of the paving and shape of the pergola, creating a space that feels very balanced and contemporary. Wood effect porcelain paving planks were used to create a secondary zone for more seating and lounging when friends and family visit, making the most of the small space. Generous planting beds will fill out to create a sense of calm and add colour into the space.
Strategically placed lighting illuminates and frames the cosy seating space, making it inviting even on cooler evenings.
The garden was completed in December 2021.

They were always polite and respectful, answered all our queries, and tidied up at the end of the day. Everything you want when having work done on your house. One of the nicest things about the build is that Aoba project manage every last detail – you don’t need to do anything apart from give them access to your garden. And any unforeseen issues that come up are handled with no fuss or drama – you get the sense very quickly that you’re in safe hands.
THE RESULT: Previously, we had a very small London garden – just a few slabs and some fake grass – that was so overlooked we never used it. Now we have a stunning garden that somehow feels so much bigger. And it’s given us that vital privacy from neighbouring houses. Such is the transformation it’s hard to believe it’s the same space – feels like we have a whole new ‘room’ to enjoy. Save yourself a tonne of time and stress – give Aoba a call.
