Acton Courtyard Garden
This small courtyard garden in a residential street in Acton was badly overlooked by neighbours and looked out directly onto the side of the adjacent property. The challenge was to create a tranquil space where the client could sit out and relax in privacy but also looked good when viewed from inside via the full width sliding doors.
Golden bamboo (planted into a deep bamboo barrier) was used to create a tall evergreen screen, providing the all-important sense of privacy. A simple palette of evergreen ferns, Taxus domes and Hakonechloa grasses worked with the limited sunlight available and gave the space a lush tropical feel.
An off-centre feature wall acts as the main focal point and is the first thing people see as they walk into kitchen/dinner. Three aluminium laser cut screens have a special powder coating to give the impression of aged copper and are back lit at night, casting interesting shadows across the space. Further low-level lighting provides a calming atmosphere and a useable outside space after dark.
The garden was completed in April 2019
